Ben & Jerry's

What makes Ben & Jerry’s purpose-led?

Ben & Jerry’s is founded on and dedicated to a sustainable corporate concept of linked prosperity. Central to the Mission of Ben & Jerry’s is the belief that all three parts of its mission must thrive equally in a manner that commands deep respect for individuals inside and outside the company and supports the communities of which they are a part.

Our Product Mission drives us to make fantastic ice cream—for its own sake.

Our Economic Mission asks us to manage our Company for sustainable financial growth.

Our Social Mission compels us to use our Company in innovative ways to make the world a better place.

Guided by our Core Values, we seek in all we do, at every level of our business, to advance human rights and dignity, support social and economic justice for historically marginalized communities, and protect and restore the Earth’s natural systems. In other words: we use ice cream to change the world.

Amy's

What makes Amy’s purpose-led?

Goodness is our guiding principle.

Our goal is to do things the right way. Right by our customers. Right by our farmers. Right by our family of employees. And right by our Earth. The right way isn’t always the smart way or the easy way, but it’s the only way we’re interested in.

We’re not in the business of making shareholders happy. In fact, we don’t have shareholders. We’re in the business of cooking delicious, organic vegetarian meals for everyone.

Together with other industry leaders, we helped pioneer the organic food industry and, more importantly, we helped make organic food available to more people.

All of our dishes are non-GMO and we’re a proud supporter of GMO labeling initiatives. Because we believe that people have a right to know what they put in their bodies. We were also one of the first to market with non-BPA-lined cans, and we’re happy to see many other food companies following our lead.

Seventh Generation

What makes Seventh Generation purpose-led?

We’re on a mission to transform the world into a healthy, sustainable & equitable place for the next seven generations.

For the past 30 years, we’ve been a company with strong beliefs about the rights of people and planet. We believe that a company’s values are as important as the products it makes. We know that plant-based products can provide the efficacy you are looking for, and that products designed from renewable plant-based ingredients are a sustainable option you are looking for. We believe that waste, is well… a waste. It’s why we use recycled materials to design our packaging, and why we design our packaging to be recycled. We have a lot of beliefs, but the biggest one is that we have a responsibility to this generation and the next seven. What do you believe? We invite you on our journey to nurture the health of the next seven generations.

From being more intentional and innovative in the way we create products, to helping you shop sustainably and understand how to take care of and extend the life of your gear, to giving used gear a second life—it’s on us all to help lessen our impact on the places we explore.

  • Scale circularity.

Warby Parker

What makes Warby Parker purpose-led?

Warby Parker was founded with a mission: to inspire and impact the world with vision, purpose, and style.

We’re constantly asking ourselves how we can do more and make a greater impact—and that starts by reimagining everything that a company and industry can be. We want to demonstrate that a business can scale, be profitable, and do good in the world—without charging a premium for it. And we’ve learned that it takes creativity, empathy, and innovation to achieve that goal.

We also believe that everyone has the right to see. 2.5 billion people around the world need glasses but don’t have access to them; of these, 624 million cannot effectively learn or work due to the severity of their visual impairment. To help address this problem, we work with a handful of partners worldwide to ensure that for every pair of glasses sold, a pair is distributed to someone in need. To date, over eight million pairs of glasses have been distributed through our Buy a Pair, Give a Pair program.

There’s nothing complicated about it. Good eyewear, good outcome.

Stonyfield Organic

What makes Stonyfield Organic purpose-led?

We’re committed to healthy food, healthy people, a healthy planet and healthy business.

At Stonyfield, the Healthy Mission Came First, Yogurt Making Second.

Back in 1983, our co-founders Samuel Kaymen and Gary Hirshberg were running a nonprofit organic farming school on a small New Hampshire farm. They were on a mission to help family farms survive, keep food and food production healthy, and help protect the environment. But the school needed funding.

So they put the farm’s seven cows to work (and all the helping hands they could wrangle) and began selling really good yogurt made without the use of toxic persistent pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

We’ve also pioneered planet-friendly business practices—from offsetting our yogurt works’ emissions, to making yogurt cups from plants instead of petroleum, to making our own renewable energy, and much more.

The thought and passion that started Stonyfield Organic in the first place has only grown stronger, and we’ve never stopped working for healthy food, healthy people and a healthy planet.

Danone

What makes Danone purpose-led?

It is increasingly clear that our global food system is in need of repair and requires a more sustainable path forward.

The power to change our food system, and our world, is within each of us. Every time we eat and drink, we vote for the world we want to live in.

From the very beginning, we made a bold commitment to nourish lives and sustain a healthier world through food by incorporating Danone North America as a public benefit corporation (PBC) and declared our first priority to become a Certified B Corp by 2020—a milestone we achieved in April 2018, two years ahead of schedule. Now, as Danone North America, we are the largest PBC and B Corp in the world: designations that demonstrate our desire to use business as a force for good, balancing our financial interests with the social and environmental benefits we want to create for people, their communities and the planet.

Harry's

What makes Harry’s purpose-led?

We give to organizations that promote better mental health care for men. Simple. Our goal is to help 1.5 million men by 2024. Not so simple but, we think, doable.

Culturally competent mental health care is a crucial resource for Black communities.

Mental health services for our veterans improves their quality of life in a major way.

Mental health care for LGBTQ people is nothing short of a lifeline.

Greenbar Distillery

What makes Greenbar Distillery purpose-led?

Sustainability is a guiding force in all we do at Greenbar Distillery. It’s as simple as making sure we’re doing the right thing and making the world a better place every day.

At Greenbar Distillery, we aim to leave the environment in better shape than we found it. How?

By using only certified organic ingredients, our spirits help maintain clean farmland and groundwater and prevent adding artificial fertilizers, synthetic pesticides or genetically modified organisms to our world.

By reducing packaging waste and pollution through lightweight bottles and 100% post consumer waste recycled labels (and avoiding frosting, plastics and metallic paints).

By planting one tree per bottle sold. (We plant them in the rain forests of Central America and provide not only carbon sinks, but also shade for fair trade crops of coffee and cacao so local farmers can better feed their families.)

By opening up our programs to third-party validation by independent organizations…so you know!

Hint

What makes Hint purpose-led?

hint® delivers refreshment without sugar, diet sweeteners, calories or preservatives. Our water brands are NON-GMO certified. They are vegan and contain no MSG, nuts, soy or gluten. Our bottles have always been BPA-free and we’re continuously improving our bottling to reduce the amount of plastic and other non-renewable resources we use.

hint® is working hard to reduce our impact on the environment and our use of non-renewable resources. Our top priorities with respect to packaging choices are (1) providing the safest possible packaging that is suitable for our product and customers and (2) minimizing our impact on the environment. We continue to review packaging innovation and to participate in research and development.

The vast majority of our bottles (and caps) are made right in the bottling facility from virgin PET plastic. By making bottles right where they are filled, we have eliminated most of the energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with the transportation of empty packaging.

SanMar

What makes COMPANY purpose-led?

At SanMar, we believe a t-shirt is more than just a shirt—it is a canvas for good. We understand our role in the industry and the responsibilities that come with it. By keeping the following three key items at the forefront of all our decisions, we strive to be a catalyst for positive change everywhere we do business.

  • People: We know our choices can make a difference and positively impact lives. Whether at one of our distribution centers, home office, or one of our supply chain partners, people are at the heart of everything we do.
  • Planet: When it comes to making a difference to our planet, SanMar is committed to being a good steward of the environment, which starts by looking inward. We regularly evaluate our operations to assess our performance in terms of energy use and emissions, water use and waste reduction.
  • Product: The journey of creating products with positive impact means looking closer at how they are made. We recognize that the choices we make, from design to development, sourcing to manufacturing, can lead to good things when done right.

Blending these three key items is the SanMar Merchandise Donation Fund. This program supports our customer’s charitable efforts in their communities through the donation of apparel or accessories.

Satori Capital

What makes Satori Capital purpose-led?

We exist to create, fund, and inspire businesses that elevate humanity.

We Believe:

Business is the most powerful force for change in the world.

Business is good because it creates value; it is ethical because it is based on voluntary exchange; it is noble because it can elevate our existence; and it is heroic because it lifts people out of poverty and creates prosperity.

Over the long term, profit is a reflection of value creation for stakeholders, a measure of what was given, not what was taken.

How a company behaves is more important than what the company produces. By setting an example of consciousness and inspired leadership, all of a company’s stakeholders are enriched and will bring the approach to their own relationships.

Principles – not rules – guide actions, and the spirit of the agreement is more important than the letter of the agreement.

Sustainability is more than a department, an initiative, or a report. It is a foundational component of a thriving business.
